There’s something incredibly rewarding about watching a child create something with their own hands.
In partnership with Huntly Men’s Shed, our four-week woodworking program gave children the opportunity to step into a real workshop and build their own bird feeders.
From the very first session, it was clear this experience was about much more than the finished product.
It was about having a go. Learning new skills. Sharing stories. Celebrating small wins. And discovering what they are capable of.
A Workshop Full of Possibilities
Throughout the program, each child built their own wooden bird feeder with the guidance of the Huntly Men’s Shed volunteers.
Week by week, they measured, sanded and assembled their projects while learning alongside the volunteers who generously shared their time, skills and encouragement.
One of the most rewarding parts of the program was watching the connection grow between the children and the volunteers.
After our first session, one volunteer simply said:
“It’s wonderful to pass these practical skills on to the next generation.”
Those few words capture exactly what made this partnership so meaningful.

By welcoming local families into their workshop with such generosity and patience, they created an environment where children felt encouraged to learn.
We’re also incredibly grateful to Epsom Bunnings for donating the timber used throughout the program. Their generosity helped reduce costs, allowing us to make the program more accessible for local families.
Together, their support has shown our children what can happen when a community shares its time, skills and kindness.
